The 45° angle tape slot allows you to flip the tape over, & view the measurement upside down, if the car is up in the air, on its own weight, while you set the tie rod length. Two plates stack together and get clamped at the left and right measuring tape clip notches while you carry the 4 piece set at the hand slot on center.
